Latex Allergy Education
Latex allergy isn't just a health problem, it is also a communication problem. When this communication is mishandled, the result is more controversy, dissension and allergic reactions. Education is key if we are to recognize and minimize the effects of latex allergy.
Two new comprehensive programs have been developed which focus on the most current issues regarding latex allergy.
Source to Surgery & Beyond Video Program
This video program was developed and produced as a result of research carried out by the independent AnsellCares Advisory Board. Source to Surgery & Beyond expands on the original 1992 video. The program highlights the manufacturing process of NRL gloves, presents information on research activities undertaken to identify and reduce the allergenic proteins in latex gloves, reviews the clinical manifestations of Irritant Contact Dermatitis, Allergic Contact Dermatitis (type IV reactions), Immediate Contact Urticaria (type I reactions), and provides guidelines on treatment and prevention strategies.
The program is designed for all healthcare professionals responsible for prevention of disease transmission and recognition of potential allergic reactions of healthcare employees. The video presentation is 27 minutes. It has been approved by The Medical College of Wisconsin for up to one credit hour of continuing education.
