Frequently Asked Questions About Latex Allergy
Russell Thompson, Editor
Inside this issue of Source to Surgery acknowledged experts provide their opinion to
some of the most frequently asked questions regarding latex allergy. Although over the last seven years many studies have been undertaken world-wide we still have no scientifically proven, definitive answers to most of these questions, as there has not been any standardization of study protocols, and thus correlating results is currently an impossible task. Further, various sectors and groups concerned with this allergy have analyzed and speculated on the results according to their own bias, sometimes providing misleading information on latex allergy. The experts published in this issue are all actively involved in the field of latex allergy, have themselves been involved in various studies, and most work with latex allergic patients on a daily basis. While we are not publishing their articles as definitive answers to the latex allergy questions, we are
providing their expert opinion to our readers in order to contribute to, and hopefully advance, the discussions on these important issues.
We feel it is important that it be understood that the solutions to latex allergy lie not in regulation, legislation or litigation, but in the academic, scientific, and commercial research and development laboratories.
