Inside this issue of Source to Surgery we begin to explore the scientific and technical details behind synthetics, which for many serve as an alternative to natural rubber latex (NRL). Jeff Welker, Director of Marketing, Protective Products Division of Reichhold has prepared a scholarly overview of Nitrile as a synthetic barrier.
Regulatory and Legislative activity surrounding NRL allergy is becoming more abundant. James Chatterton, VP Regulatory Affairs/ Technical, of Ansell Perry, has prepared a review of the current status of these activities.
Stan Gromelski, Ph.D., VP Research and Development and Allison Ryan, B.S., Research Chemist, both of Ansell Perry, describe the unique properties and uses of polyurethane, a polymer that is replacing NRL in some industries. The article also reviews the physical and barrier properties of polyurethane as used in the medical environment. Future issues will provide information on other synthetic materials.
