OVERVIEW


Ansell Healthcare (“Ansell”) has an ongoing commitment to the development of quality hand barrier products and services for the healthcare industry. This self-study Clinical Reference Manual: Understanding Latex Allergy in the Healthcare Setting is one in a series of continuing educational services provided by Ansell. This educational module provides basic knowledge of the origins and manufacture of latex gloves and the allergic reactions associated with their use.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES


Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner should be able to:
  1. Describe the current public health problems encountered with the use of Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) gloves.
  2. Explain the reactions to NRL.
  3. Describe the different methods of testing for latex allergy.
  4. Explain the methods used to determine the protein content of latex.
  5. Describe the problems encountered by individuals exposed to glove powder.
  6. Discuss the chemicals used in the manufacture of gloves.
  7. Discuss the manufacturing process for powder-free latex gloves.


INTENDED AUDIENCE


The information contained in this self-study guidebook is intended for use by healthcare professionals who are responsible for or involved in the following activities relating to hand barrier protection:
  • Educating healthcare personnel.
  • Decision-making responsibilities for hand barrier products.
  • Maintaining regulatory compliance; i.e., OSHA, ADA, and CDC.
  • Managing and monitoring employee health.


INSTRUCTIONS


This continuing nursing education activity has been accredited by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, Inc. (AORN), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation, for X contact hours. The planning committee for this educational module consists of Registered Nurses employed by Ansell with no conflict of interest in developing and writing continuing education programs. This module is for the sole purpose of educating and informing nurses of pertinent issues and is not an endorsement for any product.

Additionally, this continuing nursing education activity has been approved by the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. for 2 CEs in the AST Category 1 for continuing education in surgical technology. Approval refers to recognition of educational activities only and does not imply endorsement of any product or company displayed in any form during the educational activity.

  3. Complete the Post-Test and Program Evaluation segments, and submit for processing and awarding of CE certification.
AN 85% PASSING SCORE IS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION.


Allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing and issuance of certificate. Any learner who does not successfully complete the post-test will be notified and given an opportunity to resubmit for certification.

This activity expires on July 31, 2008.
