Understanding the Relationship between
Surgical Gloves and Electrosurgery
Ansell Healthcare (“Ansell”) has an ongoing commitment to the development of quality

Clinical Reference Manual: Understanding the Relationship Between Surgical Gloves
and Electrosurgery is one in a series of continuing educational services
provided by Ansell. This educational module provides basic knowledge of the safety
issues associated with electrosurgery in relation to surgical gloves, as well as
offering ways to prevent intraoperative electrical shock or burn to surgical personnel
during electrosurgery.
Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner should be able to:
- Define 3 key terms related to electrosurgery use.
- Describe the 3 hazards that may cause electrical shock or burn to surgical personnel
during electrosurgery.
- Describe 2 hazard prevention measures that may be incorporated to avoid intraoperative
shock or burn.
The information contained in this self-study guidebook is intended for use by healthcare
professionals who are responsible for or involved in the following activities relating
to hand barrier protection and electrosurgery:
- Educating healthcare personnel.
- Decision-making responsibilities for hand barrier products.
- Maintaining regulatory compliance; i.e., OSHA, ADA, and CDC.
- Managing employee health and infection control services.
This continuing nursing education activity has been accredited by the Association
of periOperative Registered Nurses, Inc. (AORN), an accredited approver by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation, for 2.0 contact
hours. The planning committee for this educational module consists of Registered
