Hand Hygiene
With more states enacting legislation that will require healthcare facilities to
report HAIs (13 states have public reporting laws as of this writing), the pressure
is on to measure practices such as hand hygiene. Healthcare management teams should
make it a priority to provide HCWs with products that are convenient to use, effective
in the care of their skin, placed at point-of-care and meet CDC guidelines and intents.
We all know what we need to know with regard to hand hygiene. Now is the time to
make the commitment to practice it all the time. The cultural changes to organizations
and patient care units to have zero tolerance for noncompliance of hand hygiene
practices will empower all staff to challenge anyone who may try to take a shortcut.
Every single HCW’s actions affect patient care and patient outcomes. Therefore,
it is imperative that proper hand hygiene practices always be utilized, not only
when you are in public view.
