Understanding the Issues of Double Gloving
Of significant importance is the fact that the glove defects are not identified
at the time of the incident in the majority of the cases. Often the impaired barrier
integrity is not known until the end of the case when the gloves are removed and
the blood on the hand is noted. Wearing gloves of two different colors significantly
increases the awareness of perforation.
21 One study found that there
were “fewer unnoticed perforations in the glove perforation indication group than
the standard surgical glove group.” 19% compared with 79%.
22 Other studies
have shown similar results.
23 Should the outer glove perforate, change
out both gloves as soon as possible, as the inner glove’s integrity may also be
lost.
