OVERVIEW


Ansell Healthcare (“Ansell”) has an ongoing commitment to the development of quality hand barrier products and services for the healthcare industry. This self-study Clinical Reference Manual: An Analysis of Gloving Materials is one in a series of continuing educational services provided by Ansell. This educational module examines surgical and examination glove properties and compares the characteristics of gloves made from various gloving materials.

OBJECTIVES


Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner should be able to:
  1. Discuss reasons for concern in wearing latex gloves.
  2. Describe the characteristics of good barrier protection in gloves.
  3. Discuss five (5) types of materials used in making gloves.
INTENDED AUDIENCE


The information contained in this self-study guidebook is intended for use by healthcare professionals who are responsible for or involved in the following activities relating to hand barrier protection:
  • Educating healthcare personnel.
  • Establishing institutional or departmental policies and procedures.
  • Decision-making responsibilities for hand barrier products.
  • Maintaining regulatory compliance; i.e., OSHA, ADA, and CDC.
  • Selecting and evaluating medical gloves made of latex and alternative latex-free films.
  • Managing and monitoring employee health.
INSTRUCTIONS


This continuing nursing education activity has been accredited by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, Inc. (AORN), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation, for 1.5 contact hours. The planning committee for this educational module consists of Registered Nurses employed by Ansell with no conflict of interest in developing and writing continuing education programs. This module is for the sole purpose of educating and informing nurses of pertinent issues and is not an endorsement for any product.

Additionally, this continuing nursing education activity has been approved by the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. for 1 CE in the AST Category 1 for continuing education in surgical technology. Approval refers to recognition of educational activities only and does not imply endorsement of any product or company displayed in any form during the educational activity.

To receive continuing education credit (contact hours) for this program through Ansell Healthcare Educational Services, please review the following instructions:
  1. Read the information in each section carefully with the Program Objectives as your focus.
  2. At the conclusion of the exercise, please login (if you have a UserID and Password),
    or register by completing the CE Application Form
  3. Complete the Post-Test and Program Evaluation segments, and submit for processing and awarding of CE certification.
AN 85% PASSING SCORE IS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION.


Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing and issuance of certificate. Any learner who does not successfully complete the post-test will be notified and given an opportunity to resubmit for certification.
