Ansell Healthcare Celebrates 100 Years of Protecting the Healthcare Industry
RED BANK, N.J. -- Ansell Healthcare Products LLC, a global leader in healthcare barrier protective products, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The company began in 1905, as a simple operation consisting of its founder, Eric Ansell, operating a condom-making machine in a rented shed. Today, a century later, Ansell is a global leader in the manufacture and distribution of medical gloves, occupational safety gloves, and sexual barrier protection products.

The company has undergone many transformations and has changed its name on different occasions to reflect the businesses in which it was involved at the time. The name Ansell Limited was established just three years ago, as a result of a repositioning by Ansell to focus on its core business, the supply of protective products and services in a broad healthcare context. Ansell Healthcare is headquartered in Red Bank, NJ.

Highlights of Ansell's 100 Years of protecting the healthcare industry include:
  • 1905: Eric Ansell, an English migrant, starting with $60 and a rented shed, founded Ansell in Richmond. His first products were toy balloons and condoms.
  • 1925: The Ansell Company began making household gloves.
  • 1945: Ansell designed and built the first automatic dipping machine, which could produce 300 dozen pairs of latex-free gloves in eight hours.
  • 1964: Ansell introduces the first disposable surgical gloves and the demand for single-use gloves soared.
  • 1989: Ansell acquires Edmont, the world's largest producer and distributor of industrial gloves.
  • 1998: Ansell acquires the Thailand-based Suretex Group, manufacturers of condoms and gloves.
  • 1999: Ansell acquires Johnson & Johnson medical glove business.
"We are extremely proud of Ansell's rich and growing history that has served professionals and consumers for 100 years," remarked Carol Carrozza, Vice President, North America, Professional and Consumer Marketing, "Ansell was founded on the principles of exceeding customer expectations of quality and delivery while simultaneously improving internal practices. We expect to continue to adhere to these principles during the next 100 years."
